The purpose of this dissertation is to research the general importance of translation in modern times, how idioms and idiomatic phrasal verbs are translated from the English language to the Slovene language and certainly to analyse what difficulties translators encounter during the translation process. In the theoretical part, the definitions of idioms and phrasal verbs,as well as various definitions of translation are provided. Furthermore, translation theories proposed by theorists and linguists are explained. In this part, attention is given to the types of translations, translatability, and the methods for translating idioms. At the end of the theoretical section, the focus shifts to the problems translators experience. In the empirical part of the dissertation, analyses and methodology are provided. The examples that are a basis of the dissertation are taken from four novels, two original texts and their translations. The original novels, The Da Vinci Code (2004) and The Lost Symbol (2008), were written by Dan Brown, whereas the Slovene translations, Da Vincijeva šifra (2005) and Izgubljeni symbol (2009) were translated by Nataša Müller. The main result of the analysis of all idiomatic expressions and their translations was slightly different from what I expected. The most interesting fact is that the number of idioms occurring in the translated novels is significantly smaller and thatthe problems encountered by the translator when translating idioms were quite frequent (a topic which is also analysed in the section where the omissions are analysed). Another intriguing result of the examination was the realisation that there are relatively few books and dictionaries of Slovene idioms available for a translator or a learner.
